As rugsfordesign.com our mission is to provide you with the highest quality, 100% handmade oriental rugs and kilims. Our rug and kilims originate mainly from the cities in Anatolia region in Turkey and are also usually named after these cities like Kayseri and usak (Oushak). Our rugs are all handmade and one of a kind therefore you will neither be able to order a specific size nor be able to order more than one rug each. We are proud of this. Our rugs are each a piece of art and a product of love and sweat by their tribal and villager weavers. We search for and select each rug one by one to bring you the Rugsfordesign.com difference.
Turkey has been the crossroads of the oldest civilizations in the world, due to its location between the Black and Mediterranean Sea, and where Europe and Asia meet. The Turkish culture is a unique mix of indigenous cultures that developed in this area, as well as being heavily influenced by the various cultures that flowed through the region. This cultural richness is a direct reason for Turkey's fame for many hand made art forms especially carpet, rug and kilim weaving.
The oldest rug that is known today was found in a burial site in outer Mongolia. The rug, which is named as the "Pazyryk Carpet", was buried over 2500 years and it was frozen under the Siberian ice in the Altai Mountains region. It was built by a knotting style that is known as the "Turkish Knot". This shows the importance of Turkish carpet weawing and how influential it's been over rug weaving in the world.
